Moms Seek to Change Trucking Laws After Tragically Losing their Daughters

August 09, 2019

RALEIGH, NC – According to an online news report at abc11.com, two mothers are seeking to change laws following the death of their daughters in truck underride accidents.  During the accidents, the daughters’ vehicles crashed underneath large trucks.*

One mother, from Raleigh, North Carolina, and another mother, from Florida are now seeking to protect other parents from losing their children in the same way.  The mother of one of the daughters indicated that her child was a teenager when she was killed in an underride accident.  The other mother noted that her daughter was 26 when she died in an underride crash.

Both mothers assert that underride accidents can cause serious injuries and violent deaths and as a result, they are urging legislators to create a bill that would require stricter laws that regulate trucks.  Their foremost goal is to prevent underride accidents and to make them more survivable.

"We have actually had a bill that was introduced called the 'Stop Underrides Act,'" one of the mothers said. "The bill calls for sideguards to be required by law, on all trucks. It requires there to be a strength in rear guard. There's a 1998 standard but it's too weak, so for a stronger rear guard and also for front underride protection."

"I can't bring my daughter back but if we can save somebody else's life, it'd be worth it for us," the other mother asserted.

According to nationwide statistics, there are 200 underride accident-related deaths every year.

An underride accident occurs when a passenger vehicle goes underneath the back of a tractor-trailer or possibly hits its side.  Large commercial trucks that are involved in an underride accident often involve catastrophic injuries and even death.  They are one of the most deadly trucking accidents that occur each year.
