Three Vehicular Accidents Shut Down Interstate 75 in Sarasota, Florida

August 09, 2019

SARASOTA, FL – According to an online news report at, three vehicular accidents caused the shutdown of Interstate 75 for nearly 3 hours earlier this week due to 3 separate accidents.*

Northbound lanes of I-75 in Sarasota were shut down for about three hours Wednesday morning because of three separate accidents.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the first accident happened in the early morning involving a pickup truck that was transporting pool chemicals.  The driver of the truck indicated to law enforcement that a vehicle had cut her off, forcing her to take action to avoid a crash.  This caused the truck driver to drive on the grassy edge off of the shoulder where her vehicle flipped over.  This occurred close to mile marker 204.  The truck driver sustained only minor, non-life threatening injuries and did not need to be taken to a local hospital.

The Sarasota County Fire Department’s hazardous material team were dispatched to the scene to clear the chemical spill.  The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol also responded to the scene of the crash.

The crash shut down both the northbound and southbound lanes of the roadway, as noted by the sheriff’s office.  The southbound lanes were only briefly closed and ultimately reopened once authorities cleared the wreckage in the accident.

Nearly 45 minutes while authorities cleared the scene, there were two separate accidents that occurred within a few minutes of one another.  A second accident that did not involve injuries happened south of the first accident identified above.  A third accident occurred close to mile marker 199, which is located a mile from the second accident.   In the third crash, an individual sustained serious injuries and was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital.
