GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at wsbtv.com, a family in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and the local police department are searching for the driver involved in a recent hit-and-run collision. The driver reportedly struck a man riding on a bicycle and left the scene.*
The collision happened late one evening in mid-July on Scenic Highway in Gwinnett County. WSB-TV reports that a man was riding on a bicycle by a townhome complex on the highway at about midnight and was struck from behind by a vehicle. The vehicle driver did not stop after the crash and drove away from the scene.
The victim’s family says he was on his way home from work at the time, and the area is on the route he takes on his bike every workday. During the collision, the man sustained three fractured vertebrae, a serious leg injury, and a head injury. He was reportedly hospitalized for several days and needs surgery for his leg.
As of the time that the WSB-TV report was published, the Gwinnett County Police Department had not made an arrest in the case. The victim was able to tell officers that he believed the vehicle was a diesel pickup truck, as he could hear the vehicle approaching behind him prior to the accident. He did not think the vehicle had its headlights on at the time of the crash. He was not able to provide additional information about the vehicle.
Police and the man’s girlfriend are asking for the public to provide any information that could help lead officers to the driver. The man’s girlfriend told reporters that they have a 2-year-old daughter at home, and the accident has caused numerous difficulties for the family. She created a GoFundMe page to help out with some of the financial strain.
