Vehicle Accident Closes I-20 in Columbia County, Georgia

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – According to a news report posted at, a vehicle accident caused Interstate 20 in Columbia County, Georgia, to close down. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is managing the case investigation, and deputies had released little information immediately following the crash. It is not clear at this time how many people were injured in the wreck.* 

The accident occurred in the morning near mile marker 189 on the eastbound side of I-20. Sometime before 10 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the scene on a call about a traffic accident. The news report does not provide information on how the accident occurred or what types of vehicles were involved. It is also unclear how many vehicles collided in total and how they came to crash into each other. 

WJBF states that injuries did occur from the collision, but the report does not say how many people were injured or if they were drivers or passengers of the vehicles. The extent of injuries sustained from the wreck is not known. WJBF did not say if anyone was transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. No one from the accident was identified. 

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a post to social media that the crash caused a shutdown of both lanes on the interstate by mile marker 189. A while later, the sheriff’s office posted that one lane had reopened. It is not clear how long I-20 remained blocked or how much of the interstate was closed down. 

The accident is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office. Deputies had not provided further information about the incident when the WJBF report was published online. It is not clear if anyone was cited at the scene in connection with the accident or if charges are anticipated in the case.
