Tractor-Trailer Catches on Fire on I-20 in Birmingham, Alabama

August 05, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – According to a news report posted online at wbrc.com, a tractor-trailer caught on fire on Interstate 20 in Birmingham, Alabama. The location of the incident is close to the border between Alabama and Georgia. Authorities have not released information regarding the cause of the incident at this time.*

The incident occurred in the morning by mile marker 205 on the eastbound side of I-20. Authorities and WBRC report that shortly before 8 a.m., a tractor-trailer that appeared to have been headed east caught on fire on the shoulder of the interstate, near the exit to Ranburne. It is not clear what caused the fire or whether the fire was preceded by a collision of some kind.

The name of the trucking company or carrier affiliated with the tractor-trailer was not reported, and it is not clear what type of cargo, if any, the truck was hauling at the time of the fire. A photo from the scene that was posted to the WBRC website shows the trailer engulfed in flames with the middle of the trailer almost burned totally through. The cab of the tractor-trailer does not appear to be attached any longer and is not pictured.

No other vehicles are pictured, and no additional vehicles were reported to have been involved in the incident. Investigators and emergency responders did not say whether the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured or whether anyone else sustained injuries. It is not clear how many people had been riding in the tractor-trailer before it caught fire.

The incident reportedly caused major delays on the interstate. The report did not say whether all of eastbound I-20 was closed or part of it. It is unclear how long the interstate remained blocked or how far the traffic gridlock spanned. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
