Construction Workers Tragically Killed in Boat Accident in Savannah, Georgia
SAVANNAH, GA. – According to an online news story posted at wsav.com, two construction workers were tragically killed in a boat accident in Savannah, Georgia. The workers reportedly fell off a boat on the Savannah River, and one was missing for several hours. The incident is under investigation.*
The accident occurred in the afternoon near the Garden City Terminal. Georgia Ports Authority and WSAV report that a construction crew that was contracted to perform dock renovations was working in the area, and two men on the crew somehow fell off of a boat. It is not clear how they fell or what events led to the accident. The news report does not state what the workers were doing prior to falling off the boat.
Chatham County Marine Patrol, Georgia Ports Police, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Garden City Fire Department, Savannah Fire Rescue, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene. WSAV reports that one of the workers was found early in the response, and he tragically died. The other worker was not immediately found, and crews searched for several hours but could not locate him.
Marine Patrol called off its search when it became dark, but the Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard stayed to continue the search. About six hours after recovery efforts began, authorities received a call from a fisherman and went to the location of the sighting. WSAV reports that the worker was recovered and had tragically died. Neither of the workers was identified by name in the report, and no identifying information on either of the men was released.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Ports Authority are still investigating the accident. At the time of the WSAV report’s posting online, no additional information had been reported regarding the investigation.
