Three Related Vehicle Wrecks Occur on I-85 in Durham, North Carolina

August 04, 2019

DURHAM, NC. – According to a news story reported online by, three vehicle wrecks occurred on Interstate 85 in Durham, North Carolina. The two later crashes reportedly were related to the first, resulting from traffic congestion caused by the first collision. Little information regarding two of the crashes was reported.*

The wrecks began in the late morning by Exit 183 to Redwood Road on the northbound side of I-85. North Carolina State Highway Patrol and WRAL report that at about 11 a.m., a family of five people from South Carolina was traveling in a vehicle that was towing a camper on the interstate. It appears that another vehicle merged onto I-85 North from Redwood Road and crashed into the family’s vehicle.

The makes and models of the vehicles were not reported. The news story states that the camper began leaking propone after the wreck, but it does not say how badly the vehicles were damaged. WRAL says that one person in the family’s vehicle sustained injuries. It is not clear if this person required medical transported to a hospital.

WRAL reports that Troopers charged the driver of the second vehicle with careless driving and reckless driving in connection with making an unsafe lane change. She was identified as a 20-year-old woman from Raleigh, North Carolina. No one else from the wreck was identified in the report.

The collision resulted in all of northbound I-85 being closed down, which caused a traffic backup. During the backup, four vehicles became involved in a crash at Exit 182 to Red Mill Road. Troopers said injuries were sustained but did not provide further information.

Not long after, a third vehicle wreck happened in the area. North Carolina State Highway Patrol said this was a fender bender collision, but they did not indicate whether anyone was injured.
