Driver negligence is the single most common reason why vehicular accidents occur.  While most people are experienced and careful drivers, some make mistakes that lead to serious and sometimes fatal accidents.  If you are involved in an automobile accident, it is important to consider the following 4 important steps:

  • Never leave the accident site.  In the majority of states, leaving the scene of an accident could constitute a hit-and-run crash.  Stay at the scene until law enforcement and emergency personnel have arrived.  Move your vehicle over if it is in an unsafe area.  If possible however, stay in the same position where your vehicle came to rest after the accident in order to preserve evidence as to the causation of your crash.

  • Call 911 immediately.  Oftentimes, car accidents can cause serious injuries and even death. Call 911, even if you think you are not injured.  Also, calling 911 is vital since a police officer who arrives on the scene will produce a report that later will be used to establish causation.

  • Immediately exchange vital information from the other driver(s) involved. This includes gathering the license plate number, the license number, the contact information, the insurance information as well as the make and model of the other vehicle(s) involved in the crash.
