Police: Deadly Scooter Accident in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Might Have Involved Semi-Truck

July 29, 2019

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL. – According to an online news story reported at,police officers in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, are saying that a deadly scooter accident that occurred in the city might have involved a semi-truck. They believe that another vehicle hit a woman on a scooter, but the vehicle did not remain at the scene.*

The accident happened late in the evening in the area of La Casa Drive and State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach. Police and WFTV report that at about 11 p.m., officers were called to the scene of a scooter accident by the Sugar Mill Mobile Home and RV Park. They arrived to find that a woman on a scooter had apparently been hit by another vehicle. The woman was seriously injured, according to WFTV.

WFTV states that emergency responders took the victim to AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach, where she tragically died from her injuries. According to family members, the woman, age 28, was four months pregnant at the time of the accident.

The second vehicle involved in the accident was no longer at the scene of the collision when officers arrived, and investigators have been trying to piece together what happened, having little information from which to work. Officers say they have now obtained surveillance footage that appears to show the scooter traveling east on State Road 44 and being struck from behind by an eastbound semi-truck.

However, police say that the image quality in the video is poor, and they cannot make out any identifying information on the truck. Officers are asking for the public’s help in solving this tragic case and say that the truck might have front-end damage. It was last seen headed east on State Road 44 by Interstate 95. The New Smyrna Beach Police Department can be reached at (386) 402-7790.
