Eight People Die after Head-On Collision in Mississippi
SCOOBA, MS – According to an online news report at clarionledger.com, eight people perished in an accident involving two vehicles that slammed into each other head-on.*
The accident occurred close to the Alabama border, east of Scooba, per a spokesperson from the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The spokesperson indicated that the Mississippi Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene of an accident involving two automobiles – a passenger van and a Penske truck. The 8 men that were writing in the passenger van died as a result of the impact of the crash. The driver of the van survived the accident. The names of the accident victims have not been released at this time. A woman indicated to the Associated Press that her husband, three of his brothers and four other family members perished in the crash.
The wife provided to the press that her spouse, aged 48, and family members originally came from Mexico. She told reporters that her husband and relatives were hard-working and loved their family. They were working as tree pruners at the time of the accident. The wife and husband have a 1-year-old boy.
In tears, the wife indicated that her husband "waited so long to be a dad and now this happens." The accident victims resided in four trailers that were located on a corner lot in Macon. The wife said that the accident victims commonly sat in the same spots in the van each day. The owner of a Mexican restaurant in Macon indicated that he had known two of the accident victims for a significant period of time.
"One of the guys would come here and give me hot peppers," the restaurant owner told the Associated Press. One woman said that she and her husband, who is from Mexico, were friends with a number of the victims. "That many at one time? It's heartbreaking," the woman said.
