Three-Vehicle Accident Occurs; Charges Pending Against Woman who was Critically Injured

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC – According to an online news report at wavy.com, police indicate that there are charges pending against a female driver who sustained critical injuries earlier this week.*

Police indicate that charges are pending against a woman who sustained serious injuries earlier this week. The accident occurred in the late afternoon at around the intersection of Highway 158 and East Chowan Street.  According to police, a 32-year-old woman who was driving a Mazda was heading westbound on East Chowan when she attempted to cross Highway 158 “before it was safe to do so.”    Her Mazda was hit on the driver’s side of a GMC Yukon that was heading north on Highway 158 at 50 miles per hour.    The two automobiles locked together and exited the northbound lanes onto the southbound side of Highway 158.

Her Mazda was struck on the driver’s side by a GMC Yukon that traveling north on 158 at 50 mph. The two vehicles locked together and veered from the northbound lanes onto the southbound side of 158, police said.

The driver of a 2002 Toyota pickup truck heading southbound on Highway 158 slammed into the passenger side of the Mazda, causing the woman driver to be trapped in her vehicle.  According to police, emergency personnel needed to use the Jaws of Life to free the woman from the vehicle.  The woman was then taken to an area hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries.  The driver of the Yukon was also taken to a local hospital for treatment while the operator of the Toyota was evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene.  

The woman driver of the Mazda was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.  The other two drivers were properly restrained.   The accident caused the shit down of all lanes of Highway 158 for one hour as law enforcement worked the scene.  The driver of the Mazda is facing charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle and the possession of a controlled substance.
