Fleeing Suspect is Arrested after Jumping into River in Hillsborough County, Florida

July 28, 2019

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – According to online news reports at wfla.com and foxnews.com, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Florida Highway Patrol engaged in a joint effort to arrest a man who attempted to flee the scene of an accident by jumping into a river.*

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office worked in tandem to catch a suspect who fled the scene of an accident. The suspect was attempting to evade law enforcement.

Earlier this week, a detective from Hillsborough County was rear-ended in his unmarked vehicle by a gray Mustang when he was stopped at a traffic light on Bruce B Downs Boulevard, located due south of Commerce Palms Boulevard.  The detective informed the driver, a 43-year-old man, that he needed to pull his vehicle over for an investigation of the traffic accident.   The driver refused and fled the scene of the crash.

Soon thereafter, an eyewitness of the accident called the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office indicating that they saw the crash and followed the suspect’s vehicle to Interstate 75 located north of Fletcher Avenue.  The witness indicated to police that he saw the suspect flee his vehicle on foot and jump into the Hillsborough River.

With the assistance of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office,  a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol jumped into the water to apprehend the suspect. The suspect was captured and removed from the river where he was arrested.  The man is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, fleeing to elude, driving without a valid driver’s license, and resisting arrest without violence.  The man may also face DUI charges as well.  The suspect was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for exhaustion in his attempt to evade law enforcement.

There are no further details on the accident at this time.  The crash remains under investigation by the local police.
