Tragic, Fatal Vehicle Crash Reported in Union City, Georgia
UNION CITY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at ajc.com, a fatal vehicle crash occurred earlier in July in Union City, Georgia. The accident involved a transit van and a tractor-trailer and resulted in the tragic deaths of two people. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash and has been releasing additional information as it becomes available.*
The collision happened at an intersection in Union City. Georgia State Patrol and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution report that a tractor-trailer was stopped at the intersection with its turn indicator on, and a Ford Transit van crashed into the back of the trailer.
The van had reportedly been carrying disabled adults from a nonprofit program in Atlanta, Georgia, called InCommunity. The driver had reportedly been transporting a group of program members from a center on Buffington Road in Union City to their homes. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the van driver and one of the van’s passengers were tragically killed in the accident.
The van driver was identified as a 33-year-old woman from Riverdale, Georgia. The passenger was a 25-year-old member of the InCommunity program. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution further reports that seven unidentified people were also injured in the accident.
Investigators with Georgia State Patrol believed at the time of the accident that the van driver was following the tractor-trailer too closely. Troopers have now released additional information indicating that they could not find any evidence, such as tire marks on the road, that the driver of the van tried to brake before the crash. A witness to the accident reportedly told Troopers that it appeared the driver of the van sped up before the crash.
Georgia State Patrol is still in the process of completing its investigation of the incident. Troopers do not believe that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
