Construction Zone Accident in Harris County, Georgia, Tragically Kills One Person

July 27, 2019

HARRIS COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at wltz.com, a construction zone accident that occurred in Harris County, Georgia, tragically killed one person. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and is working to determine what caused the accident, which happened in a highway workzone.*

The accident happened during the rush hour on Georgia Highway 219. The stretch of Ga. 219, also known as River Road, is currently under construction by the Georgia Department of Transportation to install passing lanes on the roadway. Authorities and WLTZ say that a vehicle was traveling down the highway and passing other vehicles in the construction zone.

The report indicates that the driver was crossing into opposite-bound traffic to pass, including in areas where the centerline is double yellow, indicating that passing is not allowed. As the vehicle was traveling in an opposite lane, it crashed head-on into another vehicle. The makes and models of the two vehicles were not reported.

WLTZ reports that the driver of the passing vehicle was fatally injured and tragically died at the scene. She was identified as a 31-year-old woman from Columbus, Georgia. The report says the woman was a mother of two children and was on her way home to Columbus at the time of the accident.

WLTZ further reports that the driver of the second vehicle was injured and taken to Piedmont Hospital for treatment. This driver was not identified in the report. His or her injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

Harris County deputies are still investigating the accident and are conducting a standard toxicology analysis to rule out drugs and alcohol as factors in the crash. The results of that test are pending. At the time of the news report’s posting online, no further information had been reported to the media.
