Vehicle Hits Woman, Child on Shotwell St. in Bainbridge, Georgia

BAINBRIDGE, GA. – According to a news report posted online at, a vehicle hit a woman and a child on Shotwell Street in Bainbridge, Georgia. Limited information about the incident has been released so far, but authorities say that a woman in a wheelchair and child were crossing the street, when a vehicle struck them.*

The accident happened in the afternoon near the Pizza Hut location on Shotwell Street. Bainbridge Public Safety and WALB report that shortly before 2 p.m., a woman in a wheelchair and a small child were attempting to cross Shotwell and were inside of a crosswalk, headed through an eastbound lane of the road. A vehicle traveling through the area then ran into the woman and the child, according to officials.

The circumstances of the incident have not been fully reported, but the report from WALB contains information from a spokesperson for the City of Bainbridge, who said the driver of the vehicle indicated he or she did not see the two people in the crosswalk prior to the accident. The report did not identify the driver or say what type of vehicle he or she had been driving at the time of the accident.

WALB reports the woman was not injured in the accident. No identifying information about the woman was included in the news report.  WALB further reports that the child, age 4, was injured and taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. The child’s injuries were said to be non-life threatening. It is unclear if the driver was injured or if anyone else was riding in the vehicle. 

The collision resulted in a brief closure of one lane on eastbound Shotwell Street. Drivers were advised to travel slowly during this time. Authorities are still investigating the case and have not yet said whether charges are anticipated.
