Police Officer Injured in Car Accident in Fitzgerald, Georgia

FITZGERALD, GA. – According to an online news report posted at, a police officer in Fitzgerald, Georgia, was injured in a car crash. The crash reportedly took place while the officer was on duty, and Georgia State Patrol is investigating. Information regarding the nature of the crash was not included in the report.* 

The accident occurred during the early afternoon on Sherman Street in Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald Police Chief and WALB report that an officer with the Fitzgerald Police Department was on duty and was somehow involved in a vehicle accident at approximately noon. The report did not say how many vehicles were involved in the accident outside of the patrol vehicle or how the accident happened.

No cross street for the location of the collision was provided, so it is not clear where exactly the accident occurred. Authorities did not provide detailed information regarding the factors involved in the accident or which driver might have been at fault. 

WALB reports that the officer involved in the accident sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police Chief Bill Smallwood said that the officer was in stable condition. He was not identified in the report, nor was anyone else involved in the accident. 

The City of Fitzgerald posted a message on social media after the accident that said, “Please take a minute to say a prayer for [an officer] who was involved in an auto accident while on duty today. He has been transferred to the Navicent Hospital in Macon with a brain bleed. Mayor Puckett, City Council and the entire City Team wishes [the officer] the healing he needs …” 

Georgia State Patrol will be handling the investigation of the accident. At the time the WALB report was posted online, no additional information had been released regarding the collision.
