Man Severely Injured After Collapse of an Overpass, Man Sues Tennessee Department of Transportation

July 22, 2019

CHATTANOOGA, TN — According to an online news report at, a man was driving on Interstate 75 when a part of the overpass close to the Interstate 24 split collapse, which heavily damaged his car and resulted in severe injuries.*

The man was operating his vehicle on Interstate 75 where a part of the overpass close to Interstate 24 split collapsed on him.  This resulted in significant damage to his vehicle and serious injuries.

Now the man, through his lawyer, has filed a lawsuit against the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for $300,000 because they “had notice” of the poor condition of the overpass and that TDOT issued a report of the cracks located on the overpass back in March, three days before the accident occurred.

According to the online article, the “claim says TDOT used traffic cameras to look at the bridge and dispatched a HELP Supervisor to the area to look at the bridge. TDOT later said in a news conference that inspectors determined that it was grout, not concrete, that was seen falling from the bridge.”

The lawsuit further alleges that despite having notice of the poor condition of the overall, TDOT did not conduct a thorough inspection of the bridge.  It also, per the lawsuit, failed to alert the public about the dangers associated with the ailing bridge.  Had TDOT adequately warned the public, the lawsuit claims, then the man would not have faced the horrific injuries and damages he sustained.

In the claim for damages, the lawsuit provides that the man sustained several serious injuries, including a fracture to his sternum and internal bleeding.  He had to have numerous surgeries which included a blow resection.  He also had surgery on the socket of his eye and now suffers from dizziness and double vision.  He also sustained injuries to his neck, back and knee, which causes him chronic pain.
