I-77 in Huntersville, North Carolina, Shut Down After Fatal Accident

HUNTERSVILLE, NC. – According to a news report posted online at, Interstate 77 in Huntersville, North Carolina, shut down following a fatal vehicle accident that occurred on the interstate. Fox 46 reports that one person was tragically killed in the crash, and another person sustained serious injuries. The victims have not been identified, and the accident is under investigation.* 

The crash happened in the late afternoon close to Gilead Road at Exit 23 on I-77. Authorities and Fox 46 report that a vehicle crash somehow occurred in the area on the southbound side of the roadway. It is unclear if it was a single-vehicle wreck or if multiple vehicles collided. The number of vehicles involved in the accident was not reported, nor was any descriptive information about the vehicles that were involved. 

The news report did not describe the nature of the accident or the circumstances of the crash. Authorities responding at the scene did not provide information about the cause of the collision or what they believed might have led to it. Investigators were still trying to determine what happened at the time of the report. 

Though the report did not say how many people were involved in the accident in total, serious injuries were reported. Fox 46 states that one person was tragically killed in the crash, and another person sustained significant injuries. Neither person was identified in the report, and it is not clear where the injured person was transported for treatment. The injuries were said to be life-threatening. No current medical condition was reported. 

The accident caused all of southbound I-77 to be closed down while crews cleared the scene and investigators reviewed the site. The blockage included the express lanes on the interstate and the general purpose lanes. It is not clear how long the closure lasted.
