Tanker Truck Crash on U.S. 1 in Key Largo, Florida, Tragically Kills One Person

KEY LARGO, FL. – According to a news report published online at, a tanker truck crash that occurred on U.S. Highway 1 in Key Largo, Florida, tragically killed one person. One other person was seriously injured in the accident, according to the news report, and had to be airlifted to a hospital for treatment.* 

The accident occurred in the morning close to mile marker 103 on U.S. 1. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Miami Herald report that several vehicles collided in the area at about 8 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway. The exact number of vehicles involved was not reported, but the story indicated that one of the vehicles was a tanker truck. The other vehicles were not described, though a photo from the scene shows one was a silver or white sedan. 

After impact, the tanker truck, which had been carrying a load of diesel fuel, spilled about 100 gallons of fuel onto the roadway. Crews were called in to clean up the spill, which took a period of time to accomplish. All of northbound U.S. 1 was blocked during this time, and authorities began rerouting drivers onto the nearby bike path. 

The Miami Herald reports that one person involved in the collision was tragically killed. This person was not identified, and it is unclear what vehicle he or she was riding in at the time of the crash. 

The Miami Herald further reports that one other person sustained serious injuries in the accident, and a medical helicopter was called to the scene to fly the person to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. This person was also not identified, nor was the vehicle he or she riding in reported.
