Man in Wheelchair Tragically Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Holiday, Florida
HOLIDAY, FL. – According to an online news report posted at tampabay.com, a man in a wheelchair was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash that occurred in Holiday, Florida. Authorities say the man was trying to cross a road in a motorized wheelchair, when a vehicle hit him and drove away.*
The accident happened during the early afternoon at the intersection of Pinehurst Drive and Moog Road. Florida Highway Patrol and the Tampa Bay Times report that at about 12:25 p.m., a man in a motorized wheelchair was attempting to cross through the intersection southbound inside of a crosswalk. Troopers say a van traveling west on Moog Road then crashed into the man.
Following the impact, the driver of the van did not stay at the scene. Security camera footage from a residence at the intersection shows that the van stopped briefly after the crash, then drove around the victim in the road and continued west.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that the man tragically died of his injuries. He was identified as a 77-year-old resident of Holiday. Residents of the neighborhood where the accident occurred said the victim frequently rode around the area and to nearby shopping centers in his wheelchair.
Troopers described the van as a minivan, maroon or red in color. They said it likely had damage to the front. Troopers reportedly located a 1991 Dodge minivan matching the description somewhere near the scene and questioned the registered owner of the vehicle. Florida Highway Patrol says the owner, a 90-year-old man, is cooperating with the investigation, but Troopers did not say whether he was the person involved in the accident.
