Pedestrian Accident Reported on Montgomery Street in Savannah, Georgia

SAVANNAH, GA. – According to news reports posted online at and, a pedestrian accident occurred on Montgomery Street in Savannah, Georgia. Limited information regarding the circumstances of the accident has been released at this time, and police officers are still investigating.* 

The accident happened early in the morning at the intersection of West 37th Street and Montgomery Street. The Savannah Police Department says that a vehicle somehow struck a pedestrian in the area at about 6 a.m. The events leading to the accident were not immediately known, and officers did not say how the crash occurred.

It is unclear if the pedestrian was in the roadway or on a sidewalk. WTOC reports that he or she was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. No identifying information about the victim was released. 

The vehicle was not described in either report, nor was any information about the driver reported by either news source. WSAV states that the intersection was blocked for a more than an hour, with all of southbound Montgomery closed and part of eastbound 37th closed. Police asked drivers to try to find alternate routes during this time. 

The Savannah Police Department is continuing to investigate, and at the time the news reports were posted online, no additional information had been released to the media. 

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reports online that in 2017, seven pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in Chatham County, Georgia, which is where Savannah is located. This represented 24 percent of all traffic fatalities in the county that year.
