Driver of a Sports Utility Vehicle Facing Charges following Accident on Interstate 85
DURHAM, NC – According to an online news report at wral.com, a driver of a sports utility vehicle was involved in a crash that occurred over the weekend that caused the shutdown of Interstate 85.*
The driver of a sports utility vehicle that was involved in a crash is in the hospital and is facing charges. A part of Interstate 85 in Durham became closed over the weekend due to a serious accident that involved a sports utility vehicle and an 18-wheeler. The northerly lanes of Interstate 85 were closed near Exit 178 for United States Highway 70 as a result of the accident. The sports utility vehicle hit a tractor trailer close to a bridge, per the Durham police. The road eventually reopened in the late morning.
Per Durham investigators, an Infinity, driven by a man, was speeding and crashed into an 18-wheeler and then slammed into a Cadillac. The investigators provide that after the accident, the Infinity flew off of the road, slammed into a guardrail and became airborne, landing on the edge of Interstate 85.
Police indicate that the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which caused him to be ejected from his vehicle. Police believe that a combination of alcohol and speeding were factors in causing the crash. The man is expected to face charges for his role in causing the accident. He is listed as in critical condition as of this weekend.
There are no further details on the accident at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the local police.
