Accident Involving Three Vehicles Results in Death of Driver

July 11, 2019

POLK COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report from wfla.com, the Florida Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation of an accident that involved three automobiles, including a Florida Department of Transportation road ranger.*

The Florida Highway Patrol notes that in the mid evening, a Road Ranger was assisting a driver of a Lexus on the shoulder of Interstate 4 close to the Hillsborough County line due to a flat tire.

Per local police, a Ford minivan driver did not move over due to unknown reasons and traveled in the shoulder, which caused the vehicle to hit the Road Ranger’s truck.  The van did not show any signs of stopping before slamming into the Road Ranger’s vehicle.  The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before hitting into the Road Ranger’s truck.

Per the police sergeant, “[h]e had cones out, traffic board up with arrow telling people to move over, lights flashing. This is a tragic situation that could have been prevented.”

The road ranger’s vehicle, as a result of the impact of the crash, was pushed into the back of the Lexus that had a flat tire.  The driver of the van was identified as a seventy two year old man from Apopka, Florida. He died as a result of the impact of the crash.  His wife and passenger sustained serious injuries in the crash, causing her to be listed as in critical condition.

The driver of the Road Ranger’s vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Lexus was uninjured in the accident.

According to the news report, “Florida’s Move Over law states drivers must change lanes when there is an emergency vehicle displaying lights and signals stopped on the roadside. FDOT Road Rangers are classified as an emergency vehicle under the law.”
