Deputy Killed on I-10 During Routine Traffic Stop

July 06, 2019

KENDALL COUNTY, Texas — The Kendall County Sheriff announced that a two-year veteran of his force died in the line of duty while making a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Kendall County. According to a report by Fox San Antonio, the deputy who was killed stepped out of his patrol car to encounter a motorist on Interstate 10 near the 533-mile marker. The accident scene is west of the city of Boerne. The deputy was married and was the father of two small children. The accident that killed the deputy, and injured another law enforcement officer, remains under investigation. *

According to a report filed by KTSA reporters, the accident happened around 8:30 in the morning. However, details about the incident are under close wraps. Reports from the scene indicate that one sheriff’s deputy died, and another Kendall County sheriff’s deputy sustained severe injuries in the incident. The current medical condition of the second deputy is not known at this time. Both of the law enforcement officers were involved in the traffic stop. Reportedly, a pickup truck slammed into the car the deputies had pulled over. There was no indication that visibility was an issue at the time of the crash. The driver of the car the officers pulled over also suffered injuries in the crash. The driver’s medical condition was not reported.

Auto accident investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety assumed responsibility for the inquiry into the cause of the crash. Their investigation is still pending. Comments from the Texas Department of Public Safety regarding the accident were not forthcoming.

KTSA reported that traffic was understandably backed up while first responders and investigators performed their duties. Reports indicate that traffic on I-10 westbound was re-routed to the U.S. 87 Business exit located on the north side of Boerne. I-10 west remained closed for several hours to allow investigators to work and crews to clear debris.
