Vehicle Crashes Close Roads in Montgomery County

July 06, 2019

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala — Law enforcement and fire officials were busy responding to a crash that closed a highway in Montgomery County. WFSA 12 News reported that a crash located on Troy Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 231, within the vicinity of the junction with U.S. Highway 82. That crash, which involved a vehicle that rolled over, closed the southbound lanes. The Alabama Department of Transportation stated that the accident happened near milepost 105.9. Neither police nor fire provided any details about the crash nor whether there were any injuries. However, the Alabama Department of Transportation reported that the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 231 reopened about 90 minutes after the crash was called in to authorities. *

WFSA 12 News reported that the Rolling Hill Fire Department was the first company to respond to the alarm reporting the accident. Rolling Hill Fire Department is a volunteer department. As a result, the Pike Road Fire Department answered the bell and responded to the accident scene on U.S. Highway 231 as well. A captain with the Pike Road Fire Department issued a public safety announcement warning people planning on traveling through that area to avoid the location of the multi-vehicle crash if at all possible. The captain also cautioned motorists who could not find an alternative route to be alert and cautious at all times when approaching the accident scene.

Details about the accident, including whether anyone was hurt in the crash, were not forthcoming from either responding fire department, the responding police, or the Alabama Department of Transportation. According to HMBPE Construction, the company hired to build the new bridge on U.S. Highway 231 over the CSX railroad, over 34,000 vehicles use U.S. Highway 231 daily. However, experts anticipate that number will reach nearly 75,000 per day by 2022. U.S. Highway 231 is a divided highway, with two lanes traveling north and two lanes headed south.
