Investigation Ongoing Following Fatal Accident in McDowell County, North Carolina

MCDOWELL COUNTY, NC – According to an online news report at wlos.com, a fatal accident that occurred along United States Highway 221 southbound in the Glenwood Community of McDowell County is currently being investigated by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.*

Per the McDowell emergency services director, the accident occurred over the weekend in the late evening hours.  Paramedics were dispatched to the scene of the accident.  One individual was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.  Another individual was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital due to sustaining serious injuries.  One individual was taken by ambulance to another area hospital with life-threatening injuries.  

There are no further details on the crash at this time.  The North Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation of the crash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 1,412 traffic related deaths in North Carolina back in 2017.  This puts North Carolina behind Georgia, Teas, California and Florida.  Per the NHTSA, alcohol was a factor in 1/3 of North Carolina’s fatal accidents.

The City of Charlotte is a big contributor to the problem.  The amount of deaths in Charlotte increased significantly since the year prior despite the fact that the total number of accidents decreased as a whole.  The City of Charlotte reported that there were 71 fatal accidents that caused the death of 74 people  The year before, 53 people died, marking the third consecutive yearly increase of fatal accidents.  As of this year, Charlotte has reported 35 fatal accidents.
