Georgia Man Involved in Vehicle Wreck on I-64 in Ferdinand, Indiana

July 02, 2019

FERDINAND, IN. – According to an online news story reported by duboiscountyherald.com, a Georgia man was involved in a vehicle wreck on Interstate 64 near Ferdinand, Indiana. The man was thankfully uninjured in the incident, which included a blown tire and a subsequent fire off of the interstate.*

The accident occurred in the late morning by mile marker 61 on I-64. The Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department and The Herald report that at about 11:30 a.m., a GMC pickup truck (model not reported) was traveling west on the interstate while pulling a travel trailer. One of the tires on the travel trailer failed, causing the pickup driver to lose control and exit the interstate.

It is not clear from the report whether the tire blew because of something on the roadway or because of an issue with the tire itself. The truck traveled off the north side of the roadway and encountered a muddy area, after which the truck traveled down a 60-foot embankment. The truck and trailer came to a rest in a heavily wooded spot, and the travel trailer subsequently caught on fire.

The Herald reports that the truck and trailer were destroyed in the fire, but the driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the accident. It does not appear that anyone else was riding with him. He was identified only as a man from Georgia.

Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Hoppenjans said the blaze from the accident was one of the hottest fires he had seen, as weather conditions that day were already very warm and humid. He said firefighters were on scene for about four hours, taking breaks to cool off and hydrate.
