JACKSONVILLE, FL – According to an online news report at actionnewsjax.com,a woman was struck and killed by a Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) bus in Mayport was a mother that many people knew in the community. According to local police, officers state that a JTA bus ran the woman over on Ocean Street close to Pearl Street over the weekend.*
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), it is not clear whether the woman was entering or exiting the bus.
“Her arm was, like, caught in the door, so when the bus driver tried to pull off, he was pulling off, and she was like, ‘Hey, hey,’ beating on the door like, ‘Hey, hey, my arm is in the door,’” one woman said.
The woman who is quoted was an eyewitness to the accident and saw the woman get run over by the JTA bus.
The driver noted that he noticed her arm was trapped in the door. He immediately stopped the bus to free her but that is when her arm released from the door and she was dragged under the bus.
The JSO indicated over the weekend that it was too soon to indicate what caused the woman to be hit. The woman is well known in the community and has an eleven year old daughter.
“She lived down the street from me and we spoke often. Every morning, I’d see her ride her bicycle up and down the road. We spoke almost daily,” one woman said.
JTA has issued a statement regarding the accident:
"The Jacksonville Transportation Authority would like to express our deepest condolences to family of the deceased. The safety and security of our customers, employees and the community is paramount. We are cooperating with the JSO's ongoing investigation to get to the bottom of what happened."
