Tampa Accident Involving Scooter and Semi-Truck Leaves One Man in Critical Condition

June 25, 2019

TAMPA, FLORIDA – As reported online by www.wfla.com, a man is in critical condition after the scooter he was riding collided with a semi-truck.*

A man riding a scooter collided with a semi-truck.  The impact of the collision caused the man riding the scooter to sustain severe injuries which have left him in critical condition.  The accident happened near the intersection of North 20th Street and Stuart Street.  The injured man in critical condition was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he is still recovering.

The Prevalence of Scooters on Tampa Roads Raises Safety Concerns

Electric scooters have become extremely popular across the country over the last few years. Scooters provide an alternate method of transportation for individuals that helps them get around cities easier and often much quicker, especially in heavy traffic.  However, with so many scooters on busy roadways, and with how quickly scooters have become popular, there are few laws governing the regulation and safety of scooters.

Injuries associated with scooter accidents are on the rise, and one of the most common injuries for scooter riders to suffer are head injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and other catastrophic injuries of the head that may be permanent. Other common injuries resulting from scooter accidents include fractured bones and neck, back, and spinal cord injuries.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a law that allows scooters to travel on all city streets across the state.  While this is a positive move for scooter riders, questions remain as to how the safety of riders can be protected.  For example, whether helmets should be required is a question many people are asking. Helmet use is recommended and encouraged, but not required.  Additional safety measures can help to reduce the chance of an accident happening in the first place.  Such safety measures may become more clear in the coming years as accidents continue to happen.
