Pedestrian Accident on U.S. 301 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Results in Tragic Death

ORANGEBURG, SC. – According to a news report published online at thetandd.com, a pedestrian accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 301 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, resulted in a man’s tragic death. South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the pedestrian was struck by two different vehicles on the highway.

The accident happened in the late evening not far outside of Orangeburg on U.S. 301. Troopers and T&D report that a man ran into the roadway for unknown reasons around 9:30 p.m. and was subsequently struck by two vehicles, including a northbound 2014 Toyota and a 1994 northbound Mitsubishi. It is not yet clear why the pedestrian entered the highway or what direction he was running.

T&D reports that the pedestrian was tragically killed in the accident. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has reportedly not released identifying information on the victim at this time. 

The drivers of the two vehicles have also not been identified. It is not clear if either driver was injured in the collision, but Troopers reported that neither is facing charges for the accident. The incident is still under investigation. 

The news report says that, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, seven people tragically died in South Carolina during the same weekend as this pedestrian accident. As of June 16, more than 400 people had died in traffic collisions on state highways. This number was down slightly from the same time in 2018. Of the total fatalities in the state through the first part of 2019, 76 were pedestrian. This is up from 65 at the same time in 2018.
