Collision on I-20 in Richland, South Carolina, Causes Two Tragic Deaths

June 20, 2019

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC. – According to a news report posted online at wach.com, a vehicle collision that happened on Interstate 20 in Richland County, South Carolina, caused the tragic deaths of two people, one of whom was a pastor. The victims were reportedly changing a tire on the side of the interstate, when a vehicle ran into them.*

The accident occurred in the evening on the side of Interstate 20. South Carolina Highway Patrol and WACH report that two men were stopped on the side of the interstate, changing a tire on one of their vehicles. The vehicles were a Jeep and a van, but it is not clear which vehicle had the damaged tire.

As the two men were still working on the tire, a passing car swerved into the shoulder and hit the Jeep, which forced the Jeep into the van and into the two men. It is not clear from the report why the accident occurred, but investigators suspected that the driver of the car was under the influence.

WACH reports that the two men who were changing the tire were both tragically killed. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as a 45-year-old man from Blythewood, South Carolina, and a 49-year-old man from Columbia, South Carolina. The news report says that the 49-year-old man was a pastor.

WACH further reports that authorities arrested the driver of the car on charges of felony driving under the influence. He was identified as a 28-year-old man from Kingstree, South Carolina. He is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center without bond.
