Collision on Racetrack Road in St. Augustine, Florida, Tragically Kills Two Bicyclists

June 19, 2019

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL. – According to a news story reported online at news4jax.com, a collision on Racetrack Road in St. Augustine, Florida, tragically killed two bicyclists. A car hit the two bicyclists, and the driver subsequently fled the scene. Authorities have located the suspected car but have not made any arrests.*

The accident took place in the morning on the stretch of Racetrack Road between Durbin Pavilion Parkway and U.S. 1. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and News 4 Jax report that a car was traveling west on the roadway and struck two bicycles that were also headed west.

It is not clear how the accident happened or what events led to the crash. Bicyclists are allowed to ride in the full lane of Racetrack Road in this area, and the speed limit on the road is 45 mph. Following the incident, the driver of the car left the scene.

News 4 Jax reports that both of the bicyclists were tragically killed in the accident. Officials reported that they have identified the victims, but the family members have invoked Marsy’s Law to allow the victims’ identifying information to remain private.

The day following the collision, deputies located a 2016 Hyundai (model not reported) at a local residence that they believed to have been involved. The homeowners were not there when deputies arrived. They have not named any suspects or made any arrests at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who has information about the accident is encouraged to contact the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at (904) 824-8304. Tipsters can also contact Detective James Jackson directly at (904) 209-2142.
