Drivers Urged to Slow Down Due to Statewide Effort to Reduce Speeding

June 17, 2019

HENRY COUNTY, GA – According to an online news report at fox5atlanta.com, the Henry County Police Department is cracking down on those who drive at an excessive rate of speed this summer due to startling statistics.*

The Henry County Police Department is cracking down on individuals who speed this summer due to startling statistics.

For over a half of the year, police issued tickets to eight hundred twenty drivers for going at speeds greater than ninety miles per hour.  Of that group, one hundred twenty nine people reached speeds that we were at or greater than hundred miles per hour.

According to a captain for the Henry County Police, there is no way to stereotype a speeder, and encourages the public the watch their speeds and be cooperative if they are pulled over by a police officer.

"It can affect anybody that you know, anybody in your family, anyone in my family," the captain said. "We just want people to slow down."

Henry County’s intentions to urge drivers to slow down is part of a statewide campaign known as its 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. which is geared toward reducing fatal accident counts. This campaign has been active since 2004.

In 2015, there was a shocking amount of speed related fatalities at 268.

A sergeant from another county of Georgia puts it best regarding the statewide campaign that “w]e try to be more visible during the 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T., which is from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We try to get out there and make our presence known. Again, if I can be seen as a deterrent just by being visible, then I want to do that. I don’t want to have to get out and take enforcement action, but if that’s what it takes to make people understand, hey, slow down, buckle up, put your phone down and don’t drink and drive, then that’s what we’re going to do.”
