DeKalb Schools Sued by Family of Man Killed in a Bus Crash

DEKALB, GA – According to an online news report at ajc.com, the surviving family of a man who died when his motorcycle crashed into a school bus back in 2017 has filed a lawsuit against the school district and bus driver for wrongful death, negligence and other civil charges.*

The motorcyclist, a man aged forty, was going on Flakes Mill Road just south of Interstate 285 when he was hit by a school bus driven by a sixty four year old man.  The motorcyclist was transported to the Atlanta Medical Center where he later died due to the extent of his injuries.

Per the lawsuit, which was filed in late May, there were twenty two middle school aged students at the time of the accident. The lawsuit alleges that the bus driver was negligent in making an illegal left turn, which caused the bus to slam into the motorcyclist.

It is not clear whether any students sustained injuries in the crash.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the motorcyclist’s surviving children, and seeks monetary compensation for lost support, funeral expenses, and medical costs arising out of the accident.  The family is also seeking compensation for the damage to the motorcyclist’s bike as well as legal expenses associated with the lawsuit.

“At the time of his untimely death,” the lawsuit states, “[the motorcyclist] was survived by two teen-aged children whom he was raising and whom he loved very much, one — a female whom he will never be able to give away in marriage and the other, a male whose marriage he will never be able to witness.”

Over four thousand bus drivers that range in age from eighteen to the late eighties, transport over 300,000 students to and from Atlanta schools. In metropolitan Atlanta alone, school buses are involved in over one hundred accidents per month, which translates into four per day, per statistics generated back in 2018.
