Crash on I-40 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Involves 30 Vehicles; 12 People Injured

RALEIGH, NC. – According to a news report posted online at wral.com, a crash that occurred on Interstate 40 in Raleigh, North Carolina, involved a total of 30 vehicles and caused injuries to 12 people. North Carolina State Highway Patrol is working to find out what caused the crash, but Troopers believe the accident might have been weather-related.* 

The accident took place in the early evening by Jones Sausage Road on I-40. Emergency responders, including North Carolina State Highway Patrol, were called to the scene of a major vehicle accident around 5 p.m. The call originally said that 15 vehicles were involved, but by the time crews arrived, 30 vehicles were included in the wreckage. 

The accident occurred on the westbound side of the interstate, and crews shut down the roadway for several hours to investigate and clear all of the vehicles from the scene. WRAL reports that 12 people sustained injuries in the accident, none of whom was identified. Seven of the injured persons were taken to hospitals, according to the report, while five people were treated at the scene. 

WRAL states that one person’s injuries were considered serious, but Troopers said the person was in stable condition at WakeMed. Other injuries sustained were minor, according to WRAL. It is not clear how many people in total were riding in the 30 vehicles, and none of the vehicles was described in the report. 

The cause of the accident has not been officially determined, but State Troopers reportedly believe the crash could have started with a vehicle hydroplaning and crashing into the concrete median. This initial incident then likely set off a chain reaction of crashes. Traffic backed up heavily during the hours following the crash, and the interstate was not reopened until after 8 p.m.
