Tragic, Fatal Pedestrian Accident Reported at Publix Super Market in Lakeland, Florida
LAKELAND, FL. – According to an online news story posted at wfla.com, a tragic, fatal pedestrian accident has been reported to have occurred at a Publix Super Market in Lakeland, Florida. The collision reportedly took place near the super market’s parking lot, when a vehicle struck a man who was walking away from the store in a crosswalk.*
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and WFLA report that a man was leaving the Publix Super Market in Lakeland and was using a crosswalk to walk to the parking lot. A witness told deputies that the man was carrying some flowers. At the same time, a Ford vehicle (model not reported) was headed east and turned left to try to park in the store’s lot.
The Ford then ran into the man in the crosswalk. Deputies said that the victim became pinned under the vehicle after impact and sustained severe injuries. WFLA states that the man tragically died of his injuries. He was identified as being 80 years old.
The driver of the Ford reportedly told authorities that he did not see the victim before or during the accident and stopped the vehicle only because he heard the sound of the crash. The driver was identified as an 85-year-old man.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a full investigation of the matter. Deputies have not announced any charges at this time, and they say a determination as to charges will be made at the conclusion of the investigation. At the time the WFLA report was posted online, no additional details about the accident had been released.
