Semi-Truck Loses Machinery Load on I-10 in Columbia County, Florida
COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL. – According to a news story reported online at news4jax.com, a semi-truck lost a machinery load on Interstate 10 in Columbia County, Florida. The incident caused significant damage to the interstate and overpass and resulted in closure of the entire interstate for several hours.*
The incident occurred in the afternoon near the Interstate 75 overpass on I-10 West. Florida Highway Patrol and News 4 Jax report that a semi-truck carrying a load of machinery weighing 45,000 pounds was headed west at about 2 p.m. and was cut off by another vehicle that was entering the interstate.
The driver of the semi-truck reportedly swerved to avoid a collision with the other vehicle, which caused the trailer to sway and lose the machinery. The large machinery slammed onto the interstate by the I-75 overpass, pushing several holes into the roadway.
News 4 Jax reported that the driver of the semi-truck, a 48-year-old man, was not injured in the incident, nor was anyone else. The truck driver said that he was frightened by the ordeal but glad his truck did not completely overturn. He also told reporters he wanted to remind drivers to be watchful for trucks on the roadways.
No information was reported about the other vehicle or its driver. It is not clear if the driver remained at the scene after the incident and spoke to investigators.
Crews closed down both sides of the interstate for several hours while they worked to clear the area and repair the road. Traffic delays stretched through the afternoon rush hour and well into the evening. The interstate was not fully reopened until about 9:30 p.m. that day.
