Deadly Moped Crash Reported on S.C. 544 in Horry County, South Carolina

HORRY COUNTY, SC. – According to a news story reported online at, a deadly moped crash has been reported as having occurred on South Carolina Highway 544 in Horry County, South Carolina. WMBF reports that the person riding on the moped was tragically killed, and the driver of the other vehicle has been criminally charged in connection with the crash.*

The accident happened in the late evening near Joe Mill Trail on S.C. 544. South Carolina Highway Patrol and WMBF report that sometime before midnight, a moped and a passenger vehicle were traveling westbound on the highway. For reasons not fully known, the passenger vehicle ran into the moped, causing the vehicles to crash.

WMBF reports that the moped rider tragically died in the accident. Identifying information about the rider has not yet been released by investigating officials. Troopers said that the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. It appears that he or she was the only person riding on the moped when the accident occurred. 

WMBF further reports that the driver of the passenger vehicle was not injured and was placed under arrest following the accident. According to the news report, the driver, a 33-year-old man, was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on charges of felony driving under the influence and driving without a license. He is reportedly being held without bond. 

Investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, and at the time of the WMBR news report’s publishing online, no additional information was available.
