Chain-Reaction Crash on West Sugar Creek Rd. in Charlotte, North Carolina, Tragically Kills Pedestrian
CHARLOTTE, NC. – According to an online news report posted at thestate.com, a chain-reaction crash that occurred on West Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte, North Carolina, tragically killed a pedestrian. The pedestrian was reportedly in a wheelchair and was struck by a vehicle, which led to a second collision between two vehicles.*
The accident happened late in the evening at an unknown point on West Sugar Creek Road. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says officers were called to the scene of an accident at about 11 p.m. and found that two vehicles and a pedestrian had been involved. It appears a Toyota (model not reported) was traveling north in the right lane of the roadway and somehow struck a man in a wheelchair.
It is not clear whether the man was crossing the roadway, was traveling along the side of the road, or was stationary in the roadway. Officers said he was not inside a crosswalk when the accident happened, but they did not provide additional details about the circumstances of that collision. After impact, the driver of the Toyota pulled into the left lane and stopped, after which a Dodge Magnum ran into the back of the Toyota.
The State reports that the pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, and he tragically died. Identifying information about the victim has not yet been released.
The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured in the accident, according to The State, and they both stayed at the scene to speak to police. They were the only people inside the two vehicles. Officers said it did not appear that speeding was a factor or that either of the drivers was impaired. Investigation is ongoing.
