One Killed, Several Injured in Head-On Vehicle Crash in Durham, North Carolina
DURHAM, NC. – According to a news story reported online at wral.com, one person was killed and several others sustained injuries in a head-on vehicle crash in Durham, North Carolina. Authorities have said it appears from investigation that one of the vehicles involved in the crash had been traveling the wrong direction on the roadway.*
The accident happened in the early morning hours on Miami Boulevard in Durham. The Durham Police Department and WRAL report that at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Ford Edge was headed south inside the northbound lanes of Miami Boulevard.
At some point in the roadway, the Ford approached and collided with a northbound Nissan Altima. The collision was head-on. The news report does not provide a cross street near which the crash happened or otherwise specify the location of the accident.
WRAL reports that the driver of the Ford sustained severe injuries in the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified by officials as a 51-year-old man from Durham.
In addition, WRAL states that a passenger in the Ford and the driver of the Nissan were injured in the wreck. Both people’s injuries were described as not life-threatening, but the Nissan driver’s injuries were also said to be serious.
It is not yet clear why the driver of the Ford was traveling the wrong direction on the road. Police believe he had been driving south in the north lanes of Miami Boulevard for a long distance prior to the crash. Investigation is ongoing.
