Orlando First Responders Train on Response to Self-Driving Shuttle Accidents
ORLANDO, FL. – According to an online story posted at firehouse.com, first responders in Orlando, Florida, recently received some training on emergency response to self-driving shuttle accidents. Autonomous shuttles are due to hit the streets of Orlando soon, and officials want firefighters, paramedics, and police to know what to do in the event of emergencies involving these vehicles.*
In a simulation that was part of the training, a pedestrian walked into the path of a self-driving shuttle, and the shuttle responded by sounding an alarm and coming to a stop. A collision was avoided. The first responders present saw in these demonstrations how self-driving shuttles will operate in the community and how to interact with them during emergencies.
The Orlando Fire Department, Orlando Police Department, and Orlando Fire Rescue crews participated in the training and received hands-on experience with the vehicles, which are owned by a company called Beep. The crews learned, among other things, how to disable the automated systems inside the shuttles and operate the vehicles manually.
The CEO of Beep, Joe Moye, says that Beep’s shuttles have been tested and have not been involved in any accidents. He said that even with their safety record, the company wants emergency responders to know what to do if an accident occurs or if someone becomes injured while riding on a shuttle.
Beep shuttles are expected to appear on roadways in the Lake Nona area of Orlando sometime this summer, according to the report. The routes the shuttles will take have still not been finalized by the Orlando Department of Transportation.
