Fuel Management Issues Lead to Over Fifty Plane Accidents Per Year
ORANGE COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at clickorlando.com, on average, 50 plane accidents occur on an annual basis due to fuel management problems, per a 2017 Safety Alert provided by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).*
Recent. A single-engine Piper aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the Maitland Boulevard ramp connected to Florida Interstate 4. The pilot had indicated to air traffic controllers at Orlando Executive Airport that his airplane had issues.
On average, over fifty aviation related accidents happen on an annual basis as a result of fuel management problems. Several recent crashes in Florida have been caused by aircraft fuel exhaustion, which simply refers to running out of fuel.
Back in May of 2018, a pilot was badly injured after his plane crashed in Port Orange. This pilot indicated to the NTSB that he "should have made a positive determination of fuel on board prior to takeoff." Upon examination, his plane only had one cup of fuel left in its two tanks, according to the NTSB.
Another pilot’s plane crashed in Ormond Beach back in December of 2016 due to alcohol impairment both before and during a flight, which was the likely cause of fuel exhaustion, per the NTSB.
An additional pilot who crashed in Ocala, Florida indicated that he did not fill up his fuel tanks before taking off. The plane crashed into a fence as the pilot attempted to land on the driveway of a local farm.
According to an aviator from the Orlando Sanford Flying Club, “[y]ou just don't run out of gas as a pilot. That's not what we do. If you do your pre-flight prep and follow the rules, usually you'll eliminate situations like this."
The aviator indicates that Florida has several fueling facilities which should eliminate crashes that occur due to fuel exhaustion.
