Death of Nine-Year-Old Influences Sarasota to Make its Roads Safer

May 27, 2019

SARASOTA, FL – According to an online news report at wfla.com, officials in Sarasota are looking to make roads safer following the death of a nine year old boy who was hit by a truck while biking to school.*

A nine-year-old boy died in an accident where he was hit by a truck while biking to school earlier this week.  This has prompted Sarasota to seek to make its roads safer.

In Florida, the state requires that students have their own method of transportation should they live within a two-mile radius of school.

As a result of the tragedy, commissions from the local county voted on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 to conduct research and determine if they can seek increased funding for crossing guards and other resources that can keep kids safe on Sarasota roadways.

According to one commissioner, “[t]he crossing guards, where are the crossing guards stationed? Is that something we need, additional funding from the sheriff’s office to ensure we have additional crossing guards on major roads."

Another commission notes that “[t]he only thing I know that could’ve prevented this is to have a crossing guard. And that’s an expense to the school board, but I think they need to look at that expense."

Per the organization Safe Kids Worldwide, pedestrian injuries are the 5thleading cause of deaths in the United States for children aged five through nineteen.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident that caused the death of the nine year old boy remains under investigation.  Charges may potentially be filed against the twenty five year old who struck and killed him.
