Tesla Electric Vehicle Catches Fire in Hong Kong Parking Lot
The Hong Kong Economic Times States Reports: Tesla Electric Vehicle Catches Fire in Hong Kong Parking Lot
HONG KONG, CHINA – According to an online news report at Bloomberg.com, a Tesla electric car caught fire in a Hong Kong parking lot, per the Hong Kong Economic Times.*
The Tesla Model S was parked in San Po Kong Plaza for about thirty minutes on May 12, 2019 where the vehicle’s battery started smoking. Soon thereafter, flames appeared coming from the smoking battery, as the Hong Kong Economic Times report. The fire made a sound of an explosion, which resulted in firefighters working for 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
This fire is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, per the Times report.
Tesla has not rendered any comments on the fire, per a Beijing spokesperson for the company. The blaze is currently being investigated by the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, per a representative from Tesla. The representative failed to identify the specific make of the vehicle involved in the fire.
Last month, there was a video posted on social media that demonstrates a car with a Tesla log in Shanghai emitting smoke from the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames. A rival of Tesla, NIO, Inc., indicated that one of its ES8 electric cars was involved in a vehicle fire in the northwest city of Xi’an while it was undergoing repairs. Both Tesla and NIO have indicated that they are conducting an investigation of the fires.
These incidents have caused great concern regarding the safety of electric vehicles in China. Back in 2018, the country recorded a minimum of forty fire related incidents involving energy efficient automobiles, which include 100% electric vehicles, and hybrid plug in and fuel cell vehicles, per the State Administration for Market Regulation.
