Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Collision with SUV in Surfside Beach, South Carolina
SURFSIDE BEACH, SC. – According to an online news story posted by wpde.com, a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision with an SUV in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. Early investigation has caused police to believe that the driver of the SUV did not yield to a group of oncoming motorcycles before attempting a turn.*
The accident happened in the late afternoon on U.S. Highway 17 in Surfside Beach. The Surfside Beach Police Department and WPDE report that at approximately 3 p.m. that day, a group of motorcycles was traveling south on U.S. 17, approaching the intersection with 2nd Avenue North. It is not clear from the report how many motorcyclists were traveling together.
At the crossing with 2nd Avenue, police officers say a Jeep (model not reported) attempted to make a left-hand turn from U.S. 17 North, and in so doing, the Jeep entered the path of the motorcycles. One of the motorcycles in the group then struck the Jeep, according to the report.
WPDE reports that the person riding on that motorcycle sustained injuries in the collision, and emergency crews transported him to her to Grand Strand for treatment. The motorcyclist was not identified in the report. He or she was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time, and his or her injuries were described as serious.
The news report from WPDE does not say whether anyone else was injured in the accident. Police are still investigating to determine what caused the wreck, and it is not yet clear if any charges will be filed.
