‘Click It or Ticket’ Campaign Reaches Cherokee County, Georgia
CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA. – According to a news story reported online by patch.com, the nationwide “Click it or Ticket” campaign reached Cherokee County, Georgia, where numerous fatal vehicle crashes occur each year. Safety belts are one of the easiest ways to prevent injuries and fatalities in vehicle accidents, experts say.*
Bucking a seat belt requires very little effort each time a person gets into a car, but surprisingly, many people opt to go without the belt. Seat belts have been shown to reduce injuries and fatalities in vehicle accidents, and this is a point that law enforcement officers try to drive home every year during the nationwide Click it or Ticket campaign.
This year’s campaign began on May 20, and it will involve about 10,000 law enforcement agencies around the country. This includes officers in Cherokee County. In 2017, according to the news report, 32 people were killed in vehicle accidents in the county, nearly half of whom were not wearing seat belts.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 27.5 million people do not use seat belts, and 10,000 people who were not using seat belts were killed in vehicle accidents in 2017. In almost all states, wearing a seat belt is mandated by law, but people do not always follow these laws.
During Click it or Ticket, officers in Cherokee County will be on the lookout for people traveling without their seat belts and will be pulling over seat belt violators in large numbers. In these situations, officers can provide warnings, education, and/or citations, based on the circumstances of the incident.
