Residents of Grovetown, Georgia, Eager for I-20 Construction Work to Begin

May 24, 2019

GROVETOWN, GA. – According to an online news story from wrdw.com, residents of Grovetown, Georgia, are eager for work to begin around the Interstate 20 exit that leads into the city. The exit currently is a source for major traffic backups, and a construction project that could change traffic issues has a ways to go before crews can break ground.*

During morning and afternoon commuting hours each week, Exit 190 off of I-20 becomes gridlocked. The exit takes interstate drivers into Grovetown, and residents there are tired of the traffic issues that build up every weekday by the on- and off-ramps to the interstate. Officials in Columbia County are working on a solution, but the process is taking time.

The county wants to create a “diamond interchange” at the area, which will include expanding Lewiston Road to four lanes and installing both turn lanes and bike lanes on William Few. Many residents are eager for the work to begin. The sooner the construction starts, the sooner the city’s traffic issues can be resolved.

“The traffic backs up,” said one resident who has lived in Grovetown for years. “It’s both in the mornings and in the evenings and after work. The traffic just backs up an ungodly amount.”

Construction can’t begin, though, until the county has obtained all the land it needs for the project. Officials are in the process of acquiring parcels and easements that they will need for the roadway expansion, and they are still about 100 parcels shy. Officials expect the project to begin sometime in 2020, and they say it will take about two years to finish.
