Two Injured After Van Crashes into Restaurant in Conover, North Carolina

CONOVER, NC. – According to a news story reported online at wsoctv.com, two people were injured after a van crashed into the wall of a restaurant in Conover, North Carolina. A boy in a wheelchair was one of the two people injured, and the news story states that the driver of the van was the boy’s mother.*

The incident reportedly took place on May 18 at Sigmon’s Grill off of North Carolina Highway 16 in Conover. The news report says that three people arrived at the restaurant in a van, including two women and a child who was using a wheelchair. One of the women got out of the van and was assisting the boy outside of the van, when the van suddenly flew forward and crashed into the wall of the restaurant. 

It appears the driver of the van, who is the boy’s mother, according to WSOC, hit the accelerator of the van instead of the brake, which launched the vehicle into the building. The van hit both the woman and the boy in the process. WSOC reports that both were injured and transported to hospitals for treatment. 

The boy was transported by ambulance to Catawba Valley Medical Center, while the woman was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. Their injuries were described as serious, but WSOC said they did not appear to be life-threatening. 

It is not clear if the woman driving the van was injured, and the report did not say how much damage had been done to the restaurant. The restaurant owner told reporters that he knew the family involved in the accident and said they were “very kind” and involved in the community.
