Man Dies in Scooter Accident in Southwest Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA – According to an online news report at cbs46.com, a twenty year old male died late Thursday, May 16, 2019 after the Lime scooter he was riding crashed into a Cadillac.*

A man is dead after his scooter collided with a Cadillac.  The accident occurred on West Lake Avenue close to Browning Street in Southwest Atlanta. Police indicate that the man was leaving the MARTA station at West Lake.  The driver of the Cadillac remained at the scene of the accident. 

The driver indicated to police that she was unable to avoid striking the man of the scooter. 

The electric scooter company, Lime, is urging riders to be extra careful while using the company’s scooters upon learning that there is a technical issue that can cause “sudden excessive braking” during rides.

According to an online report at consumerreports.org, “[t]he issue prompted the company to issue a series of updates for the firmware, the statement said, ‘which immediately results in a material reduction of occurrences.’”  However, riders should use scooters with caution over the next few days until an update is pursued, per the company.   

Per the Atlanta Police Department, they note that scooter drivers must follow the same rules and regulations of the road, similar to a bicyclist.  

Per the online report, “[a] final update is now being dispatched to every Lime scooter in the market and will be complete shortly. We are also proactively working with consumer protection agencies around the world to ensure we meet their rigorous safety expectations.”

At this time, there are no charges that have been filed.  The accident remains under investigation.  There are no further details on the accident at this time.
