Asphalt Worker Struck, Killed by Vehicle in Lovejoy, Georgia

May 18, 2019

LOVEJOY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at ajc.com, an asphalt worker was struck and killed by a vehicle in Lovejoy, Georgia. The accident occurred during overnight hours, while crews were working on a busy highway that stretches between Lovejoy and McDonough, Georgia.*

The asphalt worker was reportedly hit by a red Dodge Ram pickup truck while he was working on the side of Tara Boulevard early in the morning on May 14. The worker was part of a repaving crew working on a project by the crossing of Tara Boulevard and McDonough Road.

Local police officers were at the construction site to direct traffic around the project. Police say the accident happened around 3:45 a.m., when the Dodge truck hit the worker while trying to change lanes in order to pass patrol vehicles.

The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene, and the Lovejoy Police Department said he was cooperating with the investigation. He was not identified in the report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It is unclear whether any charges will be filed against him. Lovejoy Police Chief Michael Gaddis said the investigation was still in its early phases.

Georgia State Patrol also responded to the scene. Troopers identified the victim as a 28-year-old man from Roanoke, Alabama. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that he died at the scene.

The victim was reportedly working for a company named Wall Asphalt Services, which operates out of Carrollton, Georgia. The news report states that the Wall Asphalt Services owner told reporters the company had never before had a worker hurt in a vehicle accident.
